Welcome, Edition 12, to the next two years of exploration and learning!

This month, the latest group of students joined the EMMIR network, and kicked off their first semester at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Germany.

EMMIR's 12th Edition began their studies in September 2024.

Edition 12 brings in 33 new students representing 21 countries, making this the biggest group so far, from Afghanistan to Mexico, Ghana to South Korea. This brings the number of students and alumni in the EMMIR programme up to 289.

This cohort also has the largest amount of African students thus far in EMMIR, with 10 students from Ethiopia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Tunisia, and Nigeria.

Students are currently in the Intensive Phase (IP) part of the first semester, working on group research projects and individual papers, and studying Global Migration in the 21st century throughout September. During this period, they also become acquainted with all 8 of EMMIR's partner universities and teachers.

In the coming days and weeks, they will be officially welcomed to the University of Oldenburg with an Opening Ceremony, present their group research results, finalise their individual papers, and explore Oldenburg while getting to know their fellow students!

Starting in October, the rest of the Semester 1 includes two congruent courses focusing on methods/methodology and on theories of migration and intercultural relations.

In January, all EMMIR students will travel to Norway and continue their studies at the University of Stavanger, where the Norwegian and the Slovenian partners jointly carry out teaching.

After that, the group splits up, following their own individual research interests and mobility paths in Semester 3, attending a Focus Module at one of the partner universities:

  • Ahfad University for Women in Omdurman, Sudan

  • Mbarara University of Science & Technology in Mbarara, Uganda

  • University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa

  • University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, Czech Republic

  • University of Nova Gorica in Nova Gorica, Slovenia

  • Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata in Calcutta, India

During the third semester, students also conduct a Project-Based Internship following their individual research focus.

They will all come back to Oldenburg in December 2024 for a proposal colloquium which kicks off their thesis writing journey. The fourth semester is entirely dedicated to thesis research and writing. Edition 12's dissertations are due in the summer of 2026.

Please join us in wishing the best of luck to #EMMIRE12! Congratulations all on this first step of your journey.
