Thinking of studying abroad in 2025? You're not alone.

As academic freedom faces growing challenges in the United States, many students and researchers are exploring international options that offer diverse perspectives, global experience, and a more affordable path to higher education.

Whether you're finishing your undergraduate degree, looking for a specialized master’s program, or simply ready for something different, studying abroad is one of the most impactful decisions you can make, both personally and professionally.

More Americans are choosing to study abroad

From rising tuition costs in the U.S. to an increasingly polarized academic environment, students are looking for alternatives that align with their values and aspirations.

International programs offer:

  • Global perspectives on pressing issues like migration, climate change, and inequality

  • Multilingual, multicultural environments that prepare you for global careers

  • Lower tuition costs compared to many U.S. universities

  • Freedom to explore, connect, and build a truly international network

An example of a programme leading the way in this space is EMMIR: the European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations.

What is EMMIR?

EMMIR is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM): a prestigious, interdisciplinary program funded by the European Union. It focuses on migration studies and is jointly run by universities in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Students study in multiple countries over two years, gaining unique academic and cultural insights.

It’s more than just a degree, it’s a global classroom!

Why EMMIR might be right for you

  • ✅ Interdisciplinary focus: Migration, intercultural studies, and more

  • Tuition is significantly lower than many U.S.-based master’s programs

  • ✅ No GRE or standardized test scores required

  • ✅ You’ll study in multiple countries and learn from leading global scholars

  • ✅ Easier visa processes for U.S. citizens in most participating countries

  • ✅ Open to students from all academic backgrounds

How EMMIR works

EMMIR is a 2-year joint Master's degree, meaning you'll graduate in the summer of 2027 with an MA in Migration and Intercultural Relations. Learn more about where our alumni end up after graduating!

If you're selected as a student, you'll begin with Edition 13 in Oldenburg, Germany in September 2025 for your first semester, and then as a group move together to Stavanger, Norway. Then, in year 2, everyone chooses their own mobility paths depending on their preferred study location and topics. Learn more about the programme structure and timings.

Applications are currently open for self-funded students for Edition 13 (2025–2027). You don’t need to justify why you’re applying as a fee-paying student, just make sure to apply before the final deadline of 15 July 2025. Learn more about application requirements and processes here.

Why 2025 is the right time

There’s never been a better (or more necessary) time to think globally. If you're ready to step outside your comfort zone, build lifelong connections, and explore the world through new lenses—getting an international master's degree might be the best decision you make this year.

We look forward to welcoming you in Oldenburg, Germany this September!
