This month, we are delighted to welcome Edition 13 into the EMMIR community as they begin their first semester at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Germany.

Edition 13 is our largest cohort yet, with 43 students representing 23 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas—from Afghanistan to Zambia, Mexico to Japan. This diversity reflects the global reach of EMMIR and continues the programme’s tradition of bringing together students from a wide variety of cultural, professional, and academic backgrounds.
Students are currently in the Intensive Phase (IP) of their first semester, working on group research projects and individual papers. During this period, they are introduced to all eight of EMMIR’s partner universities and teaching staff.
Starting in October, the semester continues with two core courses focusing on methods and methodology and on theories of migration and intercultural relations.
Looking ahead, the cohort will move to the University of Stavanger, Norway in January for their second semester, co-taught with EMMIR’s Slovenian partner.
In the third semester, students will follow their individual mobility paths, choosing among partner universities in Africa, Asia, and Europe, and completing a Project-Based Internship connected to their research interests. They will reunite in Oldenburg in December 2026 for the proposal colloquium that launches their thesis-writing journey, with dissertations due in summer 2027.
Edition 13 students are now part of a global network of more than 330 EMMIRians, including over 250 graduates. Over the next two years, they will not only gain an M.A. in Migration and Intercultural Relations but also join a vibrant community of scholars and practitioners dedicated to shaping critical, global perspectives on migration.
We wish Edition 13 every success as they embark on this exciting journey!
