Imke's story:
The two years as an EMMIR student played a crucial role in my personal and professional development. A group of inspiring, courageous and truly diverse people made it possible to actually live the content of the program outside the classroom. Strong learning experiences academically and especially with fellow students in different projects and different countries made EMMIR a meaningful and cultural journey for me.
The academic network which naturally developed all over the world is highly valuable and feels like extended family. The program challenged my perspectives, encouraged critical thinking and promoted to work independently and be very self-organized. The opportunity to study in Europe as well as Africa makes the program unique: my time at Ahfad University for Women in Sudan in a very local context was a lifetime experience and allowed for genuine insights to society, culture, and politics. The slogan “together we can get something meaningful done” is written on a wall at Ahfad University. This sentence motivates me until today, especially in times where global conflicts, poverty and injustice seem to increase. EMMIR focuses on significant topics in the field of migration and brings people with expert knowledge together.
Today, I work in a highly intercultural setting. I manage a programme that offers psychosocial support for refugees all over Germany. EMMIR provided a good base for my daily work, especially with regard to interpersonal relations and empowerment of vulnerable groups.
